Captain Nemo is one of the classic characters in science fiction history. Appearing in two Jules Verne novels – Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island – the character also known as Prince Dakkar famously piloted the Nautilus, a submarine that he built on a deserted island. He’s also the subject of a new slot machine available at Cryptologic casino sites, known appropriately as Captain Nemo.

Captain Nemo is a five-reel, 20-payline slot machine that offers a wide range of betting options. This allows players to wager anything from a penny to £10 or more on each spin (if you would rather bet more per spin, then check out Microgaming slots). As usual, the object of the game is to match symbols left to right across your active paylines, with longer matches resulting in bigger wins. The symbols you’ll be matching include Captain Nemo (interestingly, he is not one of the highest-paying symbols), as well as a number of nautical and undersea symbols, like pearls, islands, maps and compasses.

A couple of special symbols are also available. A sunken ship symbol acts as the game’s wild substitute, helping you to complete winning combinations. The ship can also award prizes on its own, with a prize of up to 4,000 credits available should you manage to hit five-in-a-row on a single payline.

Also important is the Captain Nemo logo, which acts as this machine’s scatter symbol. As usual, hitting multiple scatters anywhere on the reels will award you a prize equal to a multiple of the amount you wagered on that spin.

The scatter symbol is also the way into the multi-stage bonus round that’s probably the best feature in the Captain Nemo game. If you hit three or more scatter symbols, you’ll launch a second screen game that will have you looking at a sonar display. You’ll be allowed to click any of the 100 different sonar pings on the display. Each spot will reveal one of four possibilities: a prize, a multiplier that applies to your prizes, a jackpot token, or a strike. The game continues until you hit either three strikes, which ends the bonus round entirely, or three jackpot tokens, which will take you into the jackpot round.

In the jackpot round, you’ll see a three-tiered wheel located in the ship’s engine room. First, the outer wheel will spin, landing on either a small prize or an arrow that points inward to the second wheel. That wheel will either award a moderate prize, or land on yet another arrow that points towards the final wheel. This wheel can award a large prize of instant credits, or a jackpot that’s typically worth thousands of pounds.

Captain Nemo may not exactly be a faithful adaptation of the Jules Verne novels the character first appeared in, but thematically, it fits the famous captain. The reels are located underwater, and the bonus game is definitely fitting of an undersea adventure. The game even has a little bit of a “steam punk” feel, befitting the idea of an advanced submarine from the 1800’s.
