Gonzo’s Quest tells the story of a Spanish explorer searching for the fountain of youth. Of course, playing this machine won’t make you any younger, but you can find some fabulous riches of your own by navigating the mysterious masks and avalanches you’ll encounter on the reels.
Hit the right combination of symbols, and you might just earn enough to go on your own quest – or at least take a nice holiday somewhere warm!
How to Play Gonzo’s Quest
Gonzo’s Quest can be played at any casino that features slots from Net Entertainment. This particular machine is a 20-line, five reel game that will have you matching symbols from left to right on your paylines. Players have the choice of wagering up to five coins on every line (with coin values as high as €0.50), with winnings being increased accordingly.
In Gonzo’s Quest, you’ll be matching together masks and carvings in order to trigger wins. There are a total of seven different symbols that can earn you prizes, and in each case, you’ll need to hit at least three in a row to trigger a prize. The blue and gold mask (the one that looks like it is laughing) is the most valuable of all, earning you 2,500 credits per coin wagered if you line up five in a row.
There aren’t many special symbols in Gonzo’s Quest, but one that I should point out is the Wild symbol. This can substitute for any other symbol in the game, making it extremely valuable.
Gonzo’s Quest Bonus Rounds
There are really two bonus games in Gonzo’s Quest: The avalanche feature, and Free Fall. Each of these has a way of creating a little extra excitement – and a lot more winning – on the reels. It’s even possible to mix the two features together to earn even bigger rewards!
Gonzo’s Quest is notable for having a special feature that’s built into the basic gameplay of the machine. Every time you score a winning combination, you’ll trigger an “avalanche” in which the winning icons will crumble and fall, allowing new symbols to fall onto the reels in their place. This will give you a free shot at making new winning lines, and if you should win again, the avalanche process will repeat itself.
As an added bonus, this avalanche feature also adds a multiplier on your winnings. There’s a meter right above the reels that moves from 1x (on the initial spin) to 2x, 3x, and 5x as you trigger avalanches. This means that if you continue triggering wins, you’ll not only keep winning, you’ll be winning higher and higher prize amounts.
The only true bonus round in Gonzo’s Quest is the Free Fall game, which is trigger any time you hit three or more Free Fall symbols from left to right on the same payline. Essentially, Free Fall is a free spins game, in which you’ll be awarded 10 free games. As an added bonus, all of your winnings during the Free Fall rounds are tripled. This includes winnings that come after avalanches, meaning that it is possible to have a multiplier as high as 15x when you combine these two features. It’s also possible to retrigger the Free Fall feature to get ten additional free spins.
Other Notes on Gonzo’s Quest
Gonzo’s Quest is a relatively simple slot machine, with the exception of the very cool avalanche feature. There isn’t a second screen bonus, or a progressive jackpot, so it relies mainly on classic slots action to carry the gameplay.
But while it may not have much flair in its gameplay, Gonzo’s Quest definitely pulls out all the stops when it comes to the presentation. The game begins with an animated sequence in which we watch Gonzo escape from his ship and set out on his own individual quest.
This attention to presentation continues during the game itself. Gonzo is constantly on-screen during the game, checking his map and celebrating when you hit a big payout. The character and graphics are on par with many of Betsoft’s 3D games, which is high praise. I also enjoyed the use of masks and carvings as the symbols on the reels. I can’t say whether or not these symbols are authentic to ancient American cultures, but they sure look great.
Overall, Gonzo’s Quest is the kind of game that’s more likely to appeal to casual players, or slots geeks who are looking for a relaxing game. There are no complicated special features to keep track of, and the game’s scenic setting and friendly main character definitely help keep the game as stress-free as possible. If you want to hit a jackpot, this isn’t the game for you, but if you enjoy the mix of a great theme and classic slots action (with a few twists), Gonzo’s Quest won’t disappoint you.
